With the prohibition of Marijuana and the War on Drugs having disproportionately impacted communities of color, particularly BIPOC, there are currently over 40k prisoners currently still incarcerated for doing what we all do now legally. Righting these wrongs has become a major concern for Cannadescent, a leading California cannabis brand house, which motivated them to create a first-of-its-kind cannabis company called JUSTICE JOINTS. This innovative Social Justice focused company will donate an unprecedented,100% of its profits to give back to the Black and Brown communities ravaged by the war on drugs.
The war on cannabis has produced profoundly unequal consequences across racial groups, manifested through racial discrimination by law enforcement and disproportionate distress, disenfranchisement, despair and hardship suffered by communities of color. Many of these affected groups still bear the lingering impact of the discriminatory enforcement of marijuana prohibition. This still-present influence may vary across states and regions, but none have been affected to the degree of Black and Latinx people.
The fact of the matter is that Black and Brown people did not then and do not now smoke marijuana at a higher rate than other communities according to studies, and yet it is these communities that paid a higher price for years. Higher arrest and incarceration rates for these people are not reflective of increased prevalence of marijuana use, but rather of law enforcement’s discriminatory focus on urban areas, lower income communities and communities of color.
Disparities in arrests and incarceration are seen for both drug possession law violations as well as low-level sales. Those selling small amounts of marijuana to support their own recreational or therapeutic use may have gone to jail for decades. This unequal enforcement ignores the universality of marijuana use, as well as the universal appeal of marijuana itself.
With that in mind, JUSTICE JOINTS specifically concentrates on using their profits to foster the participation and ownership of BIPOC communities within the cannabis industry, giving them the chance to grow and thrive beyond their unjust circumstances. Additionally, JUSTICE JOINTS is committed to prisoner release, expungement, and reentry programs for those affected by non-violent marijuana-related offenses. This is major in reuniting devastated communities and rebuilding precious lives.
Using Marijuana’s current legal status as a tool, JUSTICE JOINTS hopes to bring together the entire cannabis industry. Most notably, JUSTICE JOINTS has partnered with Cannabis for Black Lives (CfBL), which is a coalition of cannabis companies that are galvanizing the broader industry to support Black-led organizations and communities through a commitment to corporate hiring + company culture, amplification of Black voices, and financial support with ongoing accountability measures.
